Adapted from the 1994 Oscar winner for ‘Best Foreign Language Film’, this taut political thriller mingles finely-observed human comedy with profound tension and despair. In 1930s Russia, decorated Red Army war Hero General Kotov is spending an idyllic summer in his country house with his much younger wife Maroussia, their child Nadia and an extended family of grandmothers and cousins. Their bucolic peace is progressively shattered, firstly by tanks threatening to destroy the villagers’ wheat fields and then by the arrival of Maroussia's childhood sweetheart Mitia.

Equus rocked the conservative majority when it stormed the London stage in 1973, prompting outrage and awe in equal measure with its depiction of the young man’s pathological religious and sexual fascination with horses.
